Organic Produce Practices

“Lettuce” Talk Farming

Our farm grows delicious leafy lettuce greens, but NOT in the ground! We use a water fed system that many find similar to Hydroponics, but the two are completely different. Our system can grow lettuce 365 days a year, with the exception of hotter summer months. During this time we switch to herbs and other greens that prefer Southern Georgia hot summer temperatures.

Our primary system is Deep Water Culture Aquaponics.
We feed the fish, they feed our plants, and our plants clean the water for the fish. Following the Nitrogen Lifecycle, our plants and fish thrive in healthy environments that allow us to use less water than traditional row cropping (92% less) and have a sustainable product for our consumers. We are not “organic” certified because we do not grow in soil. Our system in completely enclosed, chemicals would kill our fish, and we use clean room practices (gloves sanitation etc). Pests are not introduced.

Blackbird Farm was founded at the height of the pandemic when my husband and I were desperate to reimagine broken food systems for our community. The farm is a working farm, hosts a campsite, and is currently open by appointment only. We made this decision to allow for schedules that meet the demands of our family as we also work full time jobs. We love to do tours, have guests, and host events.
